There are three steps required in order to donate:
Purchase Bitcoin (BTC):
There are numerous services, exchanges, and cryptocurrency ATMs. While this website does not affiliate, or recommend, any cryptocurrency site, service, or exchange, you can find a list of some of them here and here. You will want to review your choice of who to purchase from, for trust, by looking up reviews. For centralized services and exchanges, you will need to create an account, which in most cases will require them to collect information from you as part of "know your customer" and "anti-money laundering" regulations. As a side note, when a cryptocurrency service or exchange offers FDIC or federal insurance, that insurance only applies to US dollars that you transfer into your account in their service, it does not cover any cryptocurrency you are holding in your account in their service (unless they explicitly state they have an insurance policy that also covers your cryptocurrency).
As an example, here is one service that can be used to purchase Bitcoin (BTC) online with a card (no identity verification for $100 or less purchase):
As an example, here is one service that can be used to purchase Bitcoin (BTC) using a bank account. They are a cryptocurrency financial services company, but are newer and their support is limited. For this reason I would recommend only moving small amounts of money from your bank account to purchase with until you feel comfortable with their policies and practices regarding financial clearing times
As an example, here is one service that can be used to purchase Bitcoin (BTC) using a cryptocurrency ATM. You would need to setup a cryptocurrency wallet first (in step below) and bring the generated Bitcoin wallet address with you. The ATM will transfer the Bitcoin into the Bitcoin wallet address you provide.
Deposit Into a Cryptocurrency Wallet:
Just like you have a wallet for cash, you also need a cryptocurrency wallet to store and transfer your cryptocurrency - at least for online functions. A cryptocurrency wallet can create multiple receive wallet addresses - very similar to having multiple pockets to store money in a cash wallet, or multiple accounts at a bank.
Cryptocurrency is a non-tangible asset, and in reality is only a cryptographic key. Cryptocurrency networks use a ledger to keep track of transactions, just like a bank does - it is called a blockchain (which is just another name for a decentralized distributed database that has built-in security measures). For this reason your cryptocurrency wallet does not need to be online for you to receive a transaction (once your cryptocurrency wallet does come online, it will receive the transaction from the blockchain ledger).
I am sure you have noticed that I keep referring to Bitcoin as Bitcoin (BTC). This is because sometimes a cryptocurrency name can be used by multiple cryptocurrencies. For instance there is Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Bitcoin Gold (BTG), and Bitcoin SV (BSV). You must make sure that when you transfer your cryptocurrency to another wallet, that the wallet address you are transferring to is for the exact same type of cryptocurrency you are transferring - in this case Bitcoin (BTC).
There are a variety of types of cryptocurrency wallets. If you sign up for a service or an exchange to purchase Bitcoin, they most likely will provide you with a Bitcoin wallet as part of your account with them (called a custodial wallet - since they are the custodian of the wallet for you), or ask that you provide a wallet address of a wallet that you install somewhere else (such as your computer - this is a non-custodial wallet, meaning you retain control of the cryptocurrency funds in your wallet). As a starting point to read more about types of wallets, and to find a wallet, here is one review of wallets below:
Donate Bitcoin (BTC):
From your Bitcoin wallet (or service account if you are using the wallet provided by the service you bought the Bitcoin from), you can transfer Bitcoin to the Bitcoin address you would like to donate to. On this site's donation page, it is the lengthy blue alphanumeric string. If you would like to know the exchange rate of US Dollars to Bitcoin, there are a number of predefined gray buttons, or you could use the custom text fields, to calculate it on this website's donation page. If your wallet allows it, or your web browser is setup to integrate with your wallet, you can scan the QR code or click the blue Bitcoin wallet address to streamline the transfer process of the donation.
If you do choose to donate - Thank You. Your donation will help keep this resource online
